The legendary Spice Island

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Few names are so evocative or exotic in the world of travel as Zanzibar. The famous spice island off the coast of Africa has been attracting travellers for over two millennia. They came originally as traders‚ then as explorers‚ including the likes of Livingstone‚ Stanley‚ Burton and Speke. Today’s visitors can still get a flavour of those days as they walk the winding roads of the famous Stone Town among the beautiful old buildings. They can also visit the plantations that made the island so famous‚ enjoying the scent of cloves‚ cinnamon‚ pepper and vanilla.

But that’s not the only reason Zanzibar is on so many bucket lists. The coral reefs surrounding the island and its archipelago are among the most beautiful in the world. Picturesque sailing dhows or motorboats take visitors to the reefs either to scuba dive or snorkel in the turquoise waters. Dolphin watching is also popular.

Abeid Amani Karume Airport is located on Unguja island‚ part of the Zanzibar Archipelago‚ and is only a short trip away from Zanzibar town itself.
