Where the Nile Erupts

Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park is home to the famous Murchison Falls‚ long recognised as the ‘most powerful waterfalls in the world’‚ where the rushing waters of the Nile River explode through a narrow‚ seven-metre gap in the rocks.

They were first written about by the explorer Samuel Baker‚ in his book‚ The Albert Nyanza. He described his reaction: “The fall of water was snow-white‚ which had a superb effect and contrasted with the dark cliffs that walled the river‚ while the graceful palms of the tropics and the wild plantains perfected the view. This was the greatest waterfall of the Nile‚ and in honour of the President of the Royal Geographical Society‚ I named it the Murchison Falls‚ as the most important object throughout the entire course of the river.”

Also known as Kabalega National Park‚ the Murchison Falls National Park was first gazetted in 1927 and today is the largest park in Uganda‚ covering an area of 3840 sq. km / 1483 sq. miles.  It is popular with visitors because of its diverse safari activities and rich wildlife.

  • Game drives
  • Nature walks
  • Launch cruise to the bottom of the falls
