A magical haven of beauty on Kenya's northern frontier home to an astonishing wildlife.
Samburu National Reserve is the most popular Park in Kenya's northern safari circuit bordered by two smaller parks; Buffalo Springs and Shaba. The Park’s dominant feature is the muddy Ewaso Ng’iro River, which meanders through the otherwise dry and dusty reserve. Buffalo Springs, sits on the opposite, northern side of the river. Right next is Shaba, with its great rocky kopjes (isolated hills), natural springs and doum palms.
Most often a fly-in destination, Samburu National Reserve appeals to the safari first-timer as does to the veteran. The reserve is rich in wildlife with an abundance of rare northern specialist species AKA the Samburu Special Five - the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Reticulated giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa oryx. It is also home to elephants and the Big Cats. Kamunyak, the famous lioness that adopted a baby oryx resided here. Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique destination.
The 450 bird species will delight birders.
This area is home to the Samburu people, cousins to the Maasai. Their radiant traditional wear has gone on to earn them the nickname Butterflies. Their culture has remained relatively undisturbed by the modern world that they are proud to share with visitors.
The area is well-known as a walking destination, in particular, for walking safaris with camels, part of the Samburu way of life.
