Maasai Mara, Kenya

The Celebrated Site for Nature’s Annual Spectacle, “The Great Wildebeest Migration”

Maasai Mara, Kenya

Few African safari lands get as up-close-and-personal as Masai Mara, an expansive and fenceless preserved savannah that stretches between Kenya and Tanzania. It ranks right up there with Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and South Africa's Kruger National Park in terms of the world's finest wildlife sanctuaries.

Reliable rains and plenty of vegetation underpin this extraordinary ecosystem and the millions of herbivores it supports. It is home to a dream team of wildlife such as lions, cheetahs, zebras, elephants, giraffes, gazelles, rhinos, leopards, and baboons. July through October is the best time to visit when two million wildebeests bravely storm across crocodile-clogged rivers and grassy plains on their annual migration from Serengeti. It's an unforgettable experience.

Sunsets in the Mara add to the magical experience. As the sun sets, it leaves a streak of golden-yellow light in its wake, casting beautiful shadows of trees and wildlife against the glow on the Mara landscape. Days give way to starry nights, the ideal condition for nocturnal life.

The Weather in Mara

The climate in Mara is pleasantly warm year-round with cool nights. Afternoon rains can occur anytime, with an increased frequency during the two rainy seasons.

While there are two rainy seasons, the long rains from March to May (April being the wettest month) and the short rains from October to December, in essence, there is no real dry season in Masai Mara, though it rains less from June to September, and July is the driest month.

Best Time To Visit

Mara is a year-round safari destination, but, there is no doubt that June to October is preferable due to the Great Migration. Coincidentally, the weather is also favourable during this period although afternoon showers may still occur.

January and February are the alternative months to visit for the resident game, such as the Big Cats.

Accessibility

The Masai Mara is easily accessible by flight. Airkenya flies to Mara four times daily.
