Nairobi

Nairobi is the only city in the world that has a national park

Nairobi

Nairobi is the Capital City of Kenya and the main entry point to the safari hub of East Africa. It is hard to imagine that your safari can actually start at the City, dubbed “Green City” for its abundant nature reserves. Just a stone-throwaway from its busy Central District is the Nairobi National Park, the only of its kind. The sizeable Park is endowed with the typical wildlife found in all other Parks – the difference is the backdrop of the city skyline. The Park is a good place to whet your safari thirst due to its ease of accessibility both to the Park and its wildlife. For a relaxed safari, the Animal Orphanage Centre would be a good starting point to get a close encounter with wildlife in rehabilitation. The Nairobi Safari Way is much more engaging. This long walkway stretch meanders through the Park, filled with placards explaining the different fauna and flora found in the Park, and Kenya at large. For a more comprehensive safari feel, a game drive in the park would do.

Adjoining the Park is the Shedrick Wildlife Trust that nurtures orphaned elephants and rhinos that are then re-released into the wild. Watch the cuties as they are fed and thereafter play around in the muddy puddles at the visitors’ watching bay. In close proximity is the Giraffe Centre, another sanctuary where visitors learn about the conservation of Reticulated Giraffes as you feed them.

The City abounds with museums like Karen Blixen, Nairobi National Museum and Nairobi Railway among others.
Shop till you drop is the theme in Nairobi. This starts with the Masai flea markets that are well-stocked withal kinds and types of handcrafted souvenirs. The numerous malls found all over the City offer conventional goodies, found in just about any city in the world.

Nairobi is the city where the party never stops! Nyama Choma (barbecued/roasted meat) is the typical delicacy downed with a bottle of Tusker – a larger beer that has become synonymous with Kenya. In recent years, the scene has evolved to include craft beer.
