Taekwondo Waithaka Club was founded in 1998 by Master George Mureu to provide children and young adults in this deprived community of Nairobi with a facility where they would learn discipline and self-reliance.
George was the club’s sole financier and when he died unexpectedly the club struggled to survive relying on the support of friends and parents. The club lost a coach, several pupils left and a lack of sponsorship meant it had difficulty participating in local competitions. In 2019 it was on the brink of collapse when Airkenya stepped in to sponsor their first championship competition in Mombasa and another in Embakasi, Nairobi. We also supplied the club with essential floor mat equipment. As a result Taekwondo Waithaka Club students recently sat for their first-ever grading exam since the club’s inception. A proud day for everyone.
