Wild and sparsely populated Laikipia is the gateway to Kenya's Northern frontier. Many of the large privately owned ranches that occupy this spectacular region have guesthouses , homestays and private camps. Airkenya Express flies to Lewa Downs and Nanyuki and from either of these two destinations one can be transferred by road to Laikipia. 

Nanyuki was founded by white settlers in 1907 a small but very lively town. Positioned on the slopes of Mount Kenya Nanyuki is famous for the Mount Kenya Safari Club the "club" of the rich and famous now under management of the Fairmont Group.

Lewa Downs is a privately owned ranch of 16000 hectares that has been turned into a 'wildlife conservancy'. Today the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is homeground to conservation efforts of wildlife of the Northern frontier. From Black and White Rhino breeding to translocations rescue and treatment of injured wildlife. Ranching activities are still maintained and the ranch is now divided equally between cattle ranching and tourism with profits going to the local Samburu community. Accommodation is exclusive and must be booked in advance.
